Churches and palaces in Śmigiel

Start your sightseeing trip in Śmigiel. The trail can be completed by car or by bike. There are three churches to see in Śmigiel. Two parish churches are located in the town centre: Assumption of Mary Church at Farna street and a href="/co-warto-zobaczyc-en#19">St. Stanislaus Kostka Church at Matejki street. The oldest church, i.e. the St. Vitus Church is located at the cemetery at Św. Wita street. Leave Śmigiel. Take the road accessing the cemetery through the Bruszczewo village and go towards Stare Bojanowo (5km from Śmigiel) where at Główna street you can see two shrines: Bartholomew the Apostle Church and St. Teresa Church as well as the palace in Stare Bojanowo. After viewing the palace, go towards the Spławie village (5km from Stare Bojanowo) where the palace in Spławie is located. Then go towards Wonieść. After 6km you will reach your destination. That’s where the St. Lawrence Church and the palace in Wonieść are located. The latter is the seat of the Oskar Bielawski Provincial Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Kościan. From Wonieść, go towards Czacz, a village 13 kilometers from Wonieść. On the way, at the section of approximately 5km, you will pass the palace in Stara Przysieka Druga. It is worth it to see the palace in Czacz which is the seat of a School Complex as well as the Michelangelo Church. From Czacz, go for approximately 6km via Nadolnik and Skoraczewo and reach Stary Białcz to see the All Saints Church. Then drive 9km via the following villages: Nowy Białcz, Karśnice, Bielawy and Żegrówko, to reach the palace in Żegrów. When returning to Śmigiel via Nowa Wieś, you will ride for another 5km. To reach the palace in Morownica and Bronikowo and the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bronikowo you will have to return to Śmigiel and start here to reach Morownica directly. Ride along a 4km-long section from Śmigiel to Morownica, then another 3km to Bronikowo.

This is where your trip ends - return to Śmigiel.

The entire trail is 65km. The estimated sightseeing time by bike is 7.5 hours; by car: 6 hours.

Practical remarks:
- the churches included in the trail are open to the public. Palaces, except for the ones in Czacz and Bronikowo, where schools are seated, and the one in Wonieść, where the hospital is located, are owned by private companies, that is why there’s no possibility of touring them. You can view them from outside the fence, without accessing the park area,
- when riding a bike from Śmigiel, via Bruszczewo to Stare Bojanowo, you can use the bike lane,
- until 1pm on Wednesdays, an outdoor marketplace is organised in Śmigiel. The traffic in the town is intensified and there are shortages of parking spaces.
In the footsteps of the dissidents: Śmigiel – Robaczyn – Stare Bojanowo

We recommend to take this trail with a bike or car with the starting point in Śmigiel. In the town, we encourage you to visit three places: the Jewish Lapidairum located at Skarzyńskigo street, the post-evangelical cemetery located at Reymonta street, and the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church which initially was an evangelical shrine. On the market square (Plac Rozstrzelanych) there are two tenement houses which in the past were associated with evangelists. One of them housed an evangelical school, while the second one a pastor’s house. The activities of the evangelical commune in Śmigiel ended in 1945.

When leaving this town, take the road via Nietążkowo and Robaczyn to Stare Bojanowo. It is worth it to stop in Nietążkowo to see the manor house and then, in Robaczyn, the post-evangelical cemetery is. The St. Teresa Church in Stare Bojanowo is associated with the history of evangelists.

This is where your trip ends - return to Śmigiel via Bruszczewo.

Distance from Śmigiel to Nietążkowo: 2km; from Nietążkowo to Robaczyno: 3km, from Robaczyno to Stare Bojanowo: 1km. The route to Śmigiel from Stare Bojanowo via Bruszczewo is 5km.

Practical remarks:
- until 1pm on Wednesdays, an outdoor marketplace is organised in Śmigiel. The traffic in the town is intensified and there are shortages of parking spaces.
- a broad-gauge railway station connecting Poznań with Wrocław is in Stare Bojanowo. When you choose to reach Stare Bojanowo by train (while taking your bikes) you can start and end your trail in Stare Bojanowo,
- when riding from Stare Bojanowo via Bruszczewo to Śmigiel you can use the bike lane.
A tour of Śmigiel:

Śmigiel can be toured on foot, by bike or by car. We especially recommend the first two methods. We encourage you to start touring Śmigiel from the hill where the windmills are standing. Then follow Północna street or the alleys through the local park until reaching Kościuszki street. On your way you will pass the sports field (Orlik), the seat of the Cultural Centre, the Physical Culture and Recreation Centre, the playground and then turn into Skarzyńskiego street where the Jewish Lapidarium is located and the monument dedicated to those shot and killed in Śmigiel. Then, through the marketplace, you will reach Matejki street where the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church is located. From here, go along Szkolna street to the market square (Plac Rozstrzelanych) to the Town Hall. In a few steps from the town square, at Farna street, the Assumption of Mary Church is located. From here, going through Plac Rozstrzelanych via Jagiellońska and Mickiewicza streets, you will reach Powstańców Wielkopolskich street, where the water tower is located. Return to Mickiewicza street, and follow Leszczyńska street passing the buildings of the old brewery until reaching the Narrow-Gauge Train Station. From this point, return to Leszczyńska street and go towards Ogrodowa street, which will bring you to the catholic cemetery where the St. Vitus Church is located. When you leave the cemetery through its gate, you will enter Łukomskiego street which will take you to the monumental Gas Plant located next to the seat of the Communal and Housing Management Department in Śmigiel. Łukomskiego street leads to Lipowa street where the Barbara Chłapowska Park is located featuring the monumental stone. From the park, go to Reymont street where the old evangelical cemetery is located. From this point, return to the windmills, where the Śmigiel tour started – this is only a few steps away. This information is for those tourists who decided to take the Śmigiel tour on foot and leave their car at the car park near the windmill hill.
